Digestive Issues

Top Doctor for Digestive Issues & Gut Health | St. Louis

Do you think of digestive issues as just occasional discomfort? Think again. Bloating after a meal, heartburn, or frequent trips to the bathroom aren’t normal.

Dr. Sean Branham focuses on restoring gut health because when the digestive system is balanced, St. Louis patients often see improvements far beyond the stomach.

Your gut is home to trillions of microbes, immune cells, and communication pathways that interact with your brain, hormones, and immune system. When it’s functioning well, your gut helps you absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation, balance mood, and protect against illness. But when the gut is compromised, the ripple effects can lead to issues throughout the body—fatigue, skin problems, autoimmunity, anxiety, and chronic pain.

That’s why fixing the gut often leads to wider symptom relief. By restoring proper digestion, reducing inflammation, and balancing the microbiome, patients frequently notice improvements not just in digestion, but in energy, mood, sleep, immunity, and overall vitality.

The Problem:

Most digestive issues today stem from modern lifestyle factors. Processed foods weaken the gut and microbiome, chronic stress disrupts digestion, immune imbalances drive inflammation, and medications or toxins damage gut health. Underlying conditions like SIBO, food sensitivities, or leaky gut can then develop, leading to ongoing discomfort and wider health problems if not properly addressed.

A Whole-Body Reset for Digestive Symptoms

Dr. Branham doesn’t just mask symptoms with quick fixes. Instead, he takes a root-cause approach, beginning with a thorough evaluation of diet, lifestyle, lab markers, and medical history. From there, he develops a personalized plan that may include nutritional guidance, targeted supplementation, stress management strategies, and gut-healing therapies.

The result is not only relief from digestive discomfort but also improvements in areas patients may not have connected to their gut health—clearer skin, better focus, improved hormone balance, and stronger immunity.

IBS

IBS

Dr. Branham often sees patients who have tried the usual methods. See if this sounds familiar.

Your doctor listens to your list of symptoms and decides to run a basic blood test, screening for typical markers. When that test is “normal,” the next test is usually endoscopy and colonoscopy. When all of the testing that your doctor performs comes back normal, you are given a diagnosis of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

In the medical profession, IBS is known as a “diagnosis by exclusion.” What this means is they have run all of the testing that they know for the symptoms given, and all of those tests are normal, but the patient still has all of the symptoms ( bloating, gas, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, reflux, cramping). So the patient is given a diagnosis of IBS and each symptom is treated with a different medication.

There is no test that you can run to confirm the presence of IBS! It is a “catch all” diagnosis. The patient is left using over-the-counter or prescription medications the rest of their life and in many cases all of their symptoms still remain and worsen over time. The patient never really knows THE CAUSE OF THEIR DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS. Can a person ever expect to get rid of a problem if they don’t know what is causing the problem in the first place?

Leaky Gut Syndrome

There is another condition less understood and accepted by the medical profession and public at large, Leaky Gut Syndrome.

There are four different tests that can be run to confirm or deny its presence. Thankfully, it can be fixed, and we can prove that we fixed it with follow-up testing.

Leaky Gut Syndrome or “intestinal permeability” is a condition where increased inflammation over time destroys the lining of the stomach and small intestine. What can cause inflammation? The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.). This is a diet high in sugar, processed and refined carbohydrates, alcohol, GMO’s, herbicides and pesticides and overuse of antibiotics to name a few. The person is unable to break down their food thoroughly causing symptoms like acid reflux, gas, belching, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. They are not able to absorb the nutrients from the undigested food, and they experience things like low energy and fatigue.

In Leaky Gut Syndrome, undigested food particles, toxic waste, and bacteria pass into the bloodstream. The immune system then attacks these particles and identifies them as foreign. This will cause allergic and inflammatory reactions such as bloating, gas, migraines, eczema, food allergies, brain fog and memory issues, chronic fatigue, and more. The person then develops multiple food allergies and sensitivities, which can eventually lead to autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s, celiac disease, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).

A Natural Approach to Digestive Health

Functional medicine looks at gut health differently than conventional medicine. Instead of simply treating symptoms like heartburn, bloating, or constipation with quick fixes, functional medicine asks why those issues are happening in the first place. The gut is deeply connected to your immune system, hormones, and even your brain, so treating it requires a whole-body approach.

By using advanced testing, nutrition strategies, and lifestyle adjustments, functional medicine practitioners can uncover root causes such as food sensitivities, microbiome imbalances, stress-related dysfunction, or toxin exposure. Once those underlying problems are identified, care can be personalized to repair the gut lining, restore healthy bacteria, reduce inflammation, and strengthen digestion naturally.

FAQs

Healing your gut begins with addressing the root causes of imbalance. Natural approaches often include removing inflammatory foods, improving diet quality with whole, unprocessed foods, reducing stress, restoring healthy gut bacteria with probiotics or fermented foods, and supporting digestion with targeted supplements and lifestyle changes. Functional testing can also reveal hidden triggers—such as food sensitivities, bacterial overgrowth, or leaky gut—that need to be corrected for lasting results.

Every patient is different, but many people notice improvements in symptoms such as bloating, reflux, or irregularity within a few weeks of starting a gut-healing plan. Deeper healing, such as restoring the gut lining, balancing the microbiome, and reducing systemic inflammation, can take several months. The important thing is consistency—when patients commit to the process, results build over time and often extend far beyond digestion to energy, mood, immunity, and overall wellness.

In many conventional settings, digestive issues are treated with symptom-based prescriptions—antacids for reflux, laxatives for constipation, or medications for IBS. While these can provide short-term relief, they rarely address why the problem started in the first place.

Dr. Sean Branham takes a functional medicine approach that goes deeper. Instead of only suppressing symptoms, he investigates underlying causes using advanced testing, detailed history, and personalized assessments. His care plans focus on natural healing strategies—nutrition, lifestyle, targeted supplementation, and gut-repair protocols—designed to restore balance to the entire body. Patients in St. Louis often find this approach to be more comprehensive, empowering, and effective for long-term relief.
